"Oh, that." She laughed, and it only sounded a bit forced. "I told you, I was just talking to myself. IahI heard her singing. Yeah, that's it. I heard her singing and knew it was the maid. So I just wondered out loud why she didn't answer me." D.J. tilted her head back and smiled up at McCall, pleased beyond measure with her explanationnot too bad of a lie under the circumstances. |

This time when D.J. moved past him McCall let her go. She turned at the doorway. "I live alone. So do you. Don't tell me you don't talk to yourself on occasion." |

"I might. But I'm reasonably sure I don't listen for an answer, the way you do." |

The teasing smile on D.J.'s face froze. She had no quick comeback for his too accurate observation, so she let the words hang in the air between them and made a hasty retreat to her side of the room. |

Josie waited above the bed. D.J. scowled at the angel. Josie smiled back, her serenity in place. |

"Close the door, dear. Unless you want him to think you're totally insane." |

D.J. turned her head. "I'm going to shower and change before I go out," she called, then shut and locked the connecting door before McCall could respond. |
